compas
The rhythmic cycle and time-keeping pattern that defines each flamenco form.
In Depth
Compas (with accent on the second syllable) is the heartbeat of flamenco. Each palo (style) has its own compas, and mastering these rhythmic cycles is the foundation of all flamenco musicianship. Common compas patterns include the 12-beat cycle of solea and bulerias (with accents on beats 3, 6, 8, 10, 12) and the 4-beat cycles of tangos and rumbas. Musicians internalise compas so deeply that it becomes second nature, allowing spontaneous interaction within the ensemble.
Flamenco compas is so fundamental that flamenco musicians can communicate an entire arrangement through rhythmic clapping patterns alone, without playing a single note.
