bulerias

genresboo-leh-REE-ahsfrom Spanish (from bulleria, meaning racket or commotion)

The fastest and most virtuosic form of flamenco, featuring a complex 12-beat rhythmic cycle.

In Depth

Bulerias is considered the ultimate test of flamenco musicianship. Its 12-beat compas is played at blistering speed, with accents on beats 3, 6, 8, 10, and 12. The form allows enormous improvisational freedom within its rhythmic framework, and flamenco artists use bulerias to showcase their technical mastery and emotional intensity. Bulerias is the traditional closing piece at a flamenco gathering (juerga) and often becomes a friendly competition between performers.

At flamenco gatherings, bulerias often break out spontaneously in the early morning hours, with dancers, singers, and guitarists challenging each other to increasingly virtuosic displays.
