Forte

In music terminology, the term “forte” (pronounced for-tay) refers to a dynamic marking indicating to play or sing loudly. It is derived from the Italian word meaning “strong” or “loud.” When a composer wants a particular section or passage of music to be played with emphasis and increased volume, they may indicate “forte” to the performers. This dynamic marking is often abbreviated as “f” in sheet music. It is the opposite of “piano,” which means soft.
