Pianississimo: extremely soft, softer than pianissimo.

In Depth

Pianississimo (ppp) is the softest standard dynamic marking, calling for an extremely quiet sound. Three piano symbols indicate that the performer should reduce their volume to the absolute minimum while still maintaining audible, musical tone production. The challenge of ppp is maintaining beauty and control at such an extreme volume. Notes must still have clear pitch, good intonation, and musical shape. For wind players, this means using minimal air pressure with perfect embouchure control. For string players, it demands the lightest possible bow contact. The effect, when well executed, can be breathtakingly intimate and delicate.
Did you know?

Playing ppp on the timpani requires striking the drumhead so gently that the stick barely bounces back — timpanists compare it to dropping a feather onto the drum.
