darbuka

instrumentsdar-BOO-kahfrom Arabic

A goblet-shaped hand drum central to Middle Eastern, North African, and Turkish music.

In Depth

The darbuka (also known as doumbek or tabla in some regions) produces a wide range of tones from its single drumhead. The two primary strokes are the deep doum (bass tone struck in the centre) and the sharp tek (high tone struck at the rim). Skilled players execute rapid, intricate patterns combining these strokes with rolls, slaps, and finger techniques. The darbuka drives the rhythm in belly dance music, Arabic pop, and classical ensembles.

A master darbuka player can produce over 20 distinct sounds from a single drumhead, making it one of the most tonally versatile hand drums in the world.
